Sleep talking, simply known as ‘Talking during sleep‘ and formally called somnliloquy, is a sleep disorder that makes one utter words unconsciously during sleep.

This sleep disorder is popular and often experience by many, though we disregard it and take this psychiatric issue with levity. It’s a disorder that affect everybody, regardless of age and sex.

If noticed among children, the sleep disorder is regarded a result of stress underwent by the child during the day. But it is considered to be a great psychiatric problem if it happens spontaneously and shows severe cases after the age of twenty five.

Followings are some of the characteristics of sleep talking, its features and cases.

  • Mumbling, especially when forced to wake up.
  • Uttering nonsensical words, which might make person beside to run for help.
  • Sounds differently from sufferer’s normal way of talking.
  • Screaming and Shouting.

The Causes

  • Sleep talking can be genetic.
  • Sleep deprivation.
  • Excess alcohol and drugs.
  • Fever.
  • Stress.
  • Anxiety.
  • Daytime experience.

Sleep talking can happen at any time, either during the night or in the day. But, one funny thing one has to know is that it isn’t admissible in a court of law.

Though Sleep talking is not physically harmful, but only the patient bears the embarrassment.

Any cure, remedy or Prevention?

Normally, sleep talking requires no treatment, but it does, only if it happens for multiple times per week and/or day. To put an end to it, consider talking with a sleep specialist in order to ascertain the reason and cause of your problem and for possible solution.

In addition, endeavor to follow proper sleep hygiene, and avoid taking alcoholic drink at night.
