Trepanation is carried out with the help of ‘trepans,’ instrument evolved from crude sharpened stones to hand cranked augers in the dark ages to electric drills.
The medieval times medical procedure had many explanations. Some trepanners described it as “letting light in” or “letting devils out.” It would sound ludicrous nowadays, not only to believe that mere drilling a hole in someone’s head would “help release evil spirits,” but, that it would as well cure the patient of their mental illness. Surprisingly, some physicians say the gruesome trepanation isn’t going away anytime soon.
