The ‘human computer’ has she is popularly called, was invited in 1977 to the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, USA. where she solved in 50-seconds the 23rd root of a 201-digit number. This cost the US Bureau of Standards a special computer programme to check her answer on a UNIVAC 1101 computer.
In 1980, Shakuntala Devi in a multiplication quest also surprised all at the Imperial College, London. This secured a space for her in the Guinness Book of Records.
