One Mother’s 18-year Battle with HIV and Addiction (Haunting Images)

The series of haunting images are from Darcy Padilla’s award winning documentary The Julie Project – Julie Baird’s extremely sad and complex story of AIDS, addition with drug abuse, smoking, abusive relationships, poverty, births and deaths.

Photographer Darcy Padilla has won so many awards on this long-term, and in-depth photo-documentary.

Julie who was AIDS-stricken before her death ran away from home at 14 after being sexually abused by her stepfather, became drug addict at 15. She then lived with father of her first baby who had given her AIDS at the age of 19, in one of the crack dens of San Francisco.

Additional, five of her six children from three different men were taken away from her. Photographer Darcy who met Julie on February 28, 1993., gives account of Julie’s 18 years sequence of misfortune.
