Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was born and raised in Brooklyn, the son of a Haitian-American father and a Puerto Rican mother. He began his artistic career while in his teenage years, as a graffiti artist in Manhattan, before transitioning to painting. One of the likely paintings seems to be Riding with Death, which was completed in the months before his suicide in 1988 when he was just 27.
