The following practices were promoted in the ancient times, and some were also brought to the new world.

Sometimes referred to as the Bridles and Gags. This form of corporal punishment was used against the English women who nags and who were also perceived to be rude.
The bridle, often made of iron of great weight. The cage covered the entire head, with a plate to keep the offender from talking.
For intense humiliation, the women would be lead around the town for beatings.
